Title: Lag and crashing problems
Post by: ConMan on November 21, 2007, 05:26:24 PM
Ok, i have 2 probs rite now 1. Cod2 always seems to be spiking in lag (im not sure if this makes sense or not but i hope u get the point) 2. My comp crashes usually after playing 10-15 minutes in game.
these also apply for cod4, and pretty much any other fps game i play.
Specs: vid card: Nvidia 6600 AGP 256mb processor: pentium d 2.66 ghz 1gb ddr2 ram motherboard: asus P5VDC-MX (its pretty old)
i will really appreciate any help or suggestions from anybody. :P

lag is probably smoke/map it will always spike up and down... comp crashes, most likely graphics card overheating

for cod2 or cod4 look at your lagometer. type (in the console) /cg_drawLagometer 1 You should see only a steady blue and green graph. make sure that when your game "lags" you dont have any red spikes or yellow stuff in those graphs.

i already had the lagometer on when i started playing on nobs servers.
everytime i have a spike, the bottom meter goes crazy with red and yellow. the top meter also goes crazy, but idk why the top meter sometimes stays steady even tho im lagging.

top meter is server side, bottom is client side. so top staying normal just means that you are getting lag on your side, but the server is fine. both of them lagging means something is wrong with the server.

Ok, I got some commands that might be able to help you.
/cl_packetdup "1" /snaps 30 /cl_maxpackets "63" or "100"
Also make sure you don't have that much things running on the background. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open your task manager and see how many processes you have running, which a lot of things can be over using your processor and causing lag. Another thing if like a wireless laptop used around your household is using the same network as you are and downloading music or whatsoever they maybe downloading, that also creates lag as it overuses your modem. Also make sure you aren't playing in DX9.
I have a NVidia 6800 XT and I run both CoD2 and CoD4 pretty ok. CoD2 I get up to 333 fps which is what I cap it at, but that's when I'm staring at a corner steadily. Most of the time I get 125 constant with my settings/config. CoD4 is a DX9 game so I get about 40-125 fps with my config.
Although lag is more connected towards your network/internet issue. First try those commands out first and let me know.
