i dont think that my power supply can handle it. well the power supply can but it only has 2 6 pin pcie plugs. the 4870 has 2 per card. plus i dont have all the money in the world. 3870's can be had cheap. also my board only does the other slot @4. would that hurt the crossfire alot

yea 3870's can be had cheap. but are NOWHERE near the 4xxx line.
9800gtx ($200-250) = hd4850 ($175-200) 4850 is a little bit better, more features, and single slot gtx260 (~$400) = hd4870 (~$300) 4870 wins slightly gtx280(~$600) = hd4870x2 (who knows, ~$400-500?) 4870x2 should assrape it
unless nvidia drops prices asap, ati wins this round

i am not looking for the best of the best just something that is gonna be alot better than my 8800gts g90. also does anyone one about the slot being 4x. most everything i read said that it doesnt use anymore than that anyway. also by the time i could afford 2 4870's they would have a new system out

i believe x38 and x48 do 16/16 most p35's do 16/4, some (maybe only a cpl) do 8x8 p45 dunno
you dont need 16/16, 8/8 is fine, tiny tiny bottlenecking if any at all. 16/4 tho i would not recommend

this is the board i am stuck with for a while so. you dont think i should take up the offer on the 2 3850's for 75 bucks. they are 256 ddr3 version but have very good reviews. think 2 would be better than my one 8800gts 320mb

i did end up getting the VisionTek 3870 OC. it should do better than my 8800gts g90, but i am later gonna try to crossfire them. if it doesnt do well on this board i will get another one. if that is not enough i will get 2 4870's

it will do better than youre g90, its a good card, a little under the 8800gt in terms of raw performance. but its quieter and cooler, and less watts.
how much you pay, i hope it wasnt over 100?

well the visontek 3870 OC i got didnt outdo my 8800gts 320 g80 that much at all in the benches. fps in game are a little higher. i dont see waht the hype about this card was. next i am gonna get a new proccesor, e640 doesnt cut it anymore. then 2 more gigs or mushkin

there was no hype with the 3870, it is slighty under the 8800gt. the hype is in the 4870, which demolishes virtually any card

ok thinking about getting rid of the 3870 for a 3870x2 or a 4870. almost the same price but what do you guys think
