i looked at several different cards. i have 2 pci-x slots, so i'd prefer that, but its also backwards compatible with pci. afaik theres a few different types of raid. there's motherboard raid, which is fine for general purpose, there software raid, which are in inexpensive raid cards, and there true "hardware" raid, which the raid is phyisically handled by the card- but be ready to fork over the big bucks. hardware raid is way superior.

i couldnt find the right one, every one was either missing something. the supermicro i got is not a raid card, its an 8-port SATA card, that supports software raid, which means it allows the OS to handle raid. so if i load server 2003 or linux on my server, and I have 8x500gb drives, I can, through, the OS, create a RAID array.

i bought mine for around $105 in canada, newegg has it for 95

it was a good choice for me since it has 8 ports (4 for now, 4 for future use), is pci-x, didnt have the siliconimage chip (which has mixed reviews) and is a reputable name (was going to go with syba to save $) and comes with 8 cables
