Post by: DriveRaider on July 23, 2008, 11:59:15 AM
Hey guys im looking to get a good overclockable motherboard. werth told me about the 750i ftw, just curious what are some well known nicely overclockable motherboards for my Q6600. ill be buying a new mobo now that i found out my CPU's power is being held back.

oh yea 780i is nice, if you wanna spend 250. are you going SLI for sure? if not, take one of these HANDS DOWN:

also i noticed that the motherboards have 8 pin CPU connectors. do i need an adapter or can i just use my 4 pin?

does your PSU have a 4 pin CPU connector or an 8 pin? does it really matter?

forget the 780i, way too expensive. i may just get this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128086 and pocket the $100. i dont plan on going SLI anyways.

its a q6600 OC champ, its awesome in every way.

the 8 pin CPU connector worries me, will my 4 pin be ok?

its just TWO 4pin connectors connected at the same time... i have the same thing with 680i .. you should have two CPU power plugs coming from your PSU

does the OCZ 700 watt http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341002 have 2 CPU plugs?
Title: Re: nForce 7 series motherboard

lol thats the exact same PSU i'm running and yes it does

so basically you need a stronger power supply and 8 pin to feed a quad core. is the 700 watt OCZ PSU a good power supply for SLI and a quad?

I have quad, SLi, 6x120mm fans, 6 hdds, 2 optical drives.... and its rock solid with quite a bit of headroom

so again, just to clarify. the 700 watt has 2 , 12v 4 pins for the CPU. and the quads need this extra juice.

ok, i think ive found someone to buy my old 650i for $75. my new motherboard is going to be the 750i like werth suggested http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188026 and my new PSU will be a 700 watt OCZ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341002 . i have just 2 questions. 1) will my 800 ram be ok with this motherboard? how does OC'ing the FSB work as far as ram goes in unlinked mode as opposed to linked? 2) i just bought a 750 gb hitachi drive for $89 and i want to know if i can use this as the Drive with my OS on it and stick the 250gb one im currently using for my OS as a slave. how does it work if my hitachi is sata and my maxtor is pata? will i be able to pull all my files after i reinstall a windows to a new hard drive or are there some kind of security measures that wont let me access the old HD after swapping mobos?

1) 800 ram will be fine, what are you using again, q6600? linking ram/fsb is better on nvidia chipsets, so i'd do that. maybe do a 400x8 and keep your ram at 800, so 1:1... or if you think you can get to 3.6, 400x9, or you can always try 450x8 or something and oc your ram to 900mhz

2)when changing the OS around on drives, i recommend a fresh install. i'm sure it's "possible" boot up on your maxtor, and then clone it to the hitachi, and then set that as the boot if you know whta i mean. runnin 1 sata and 1 pata makes no difference, shouldnt run into any conflicts

thanks for the help werth but i think i worded the question wrong, i dont want to "not" install a fresh copy of windows. i just want to install the new copy of windows on the brand new hitachi, then connecting the old one as a slave ( dont know how id do this since its in pata and the main ones in sata) and grabbing all my data. in other words, i want to have a running OS on the hitachi and connect the maxtor as the slave so i can access my files.

yea i get yea. im saying you might be able to keep your current OS install by cloning the drive. but i recommend installing fresh, which you will be doing. yea just plug the sata drive into an sata port. as for the ide/pata drive, well just plug the drive into the ide port on the mobo. as for the drive being in master/slave/cable select, im not 100% sure. just leave it in master. sata+pata combos dont matter when dealing with master/slave issues, thats only when dealing with more than one pata device on the same sleave.

i would leave the pin on master.

I plan on getting the EVGA 780i tri sli ftw edition mobo.....anybody have any opinions on this board?

i think it would be a waste to go tri-sli. i just want the lowest FTW SLI board so i can SLI if i want to and OC the hell out of it. i think the 780i would get about the same OC as the 750. i saw one guy get 3.8 ghz on his Q6600...

nope, personally i would stay away from nvidia boards and always have. but you guys are so keen on sli. (event hough CF scales better).

IMO you still cant beat a p35/p45 board for bang for buck and solid performance. if you want CF with 4850/4870 P45 would do. If you want to be in the clear (maybe two 4870x2's) make sure to go 16x/16x so x38/48.

for me, thers only two boards to consider atm.. DFI t2rs p35/p45. (unless SLI, then good luck)

too bad i already ordered the 750i. newegg has a non-refundable policy with this motherboard too. i guess im stuck with it now. at least EVGA has a lifetime warranty -_-
