Need help for new rig
« on: June 16, 2008, 12:45:20 AM »
Hi, I am planning a new build and thinking of mixing Intel and ATI

This is the specs for my new comp:

-Q6600 or 6700
-Asus HD 3870 x2
-2 GB of memory
-750W PSU at least
-Antec 900 case
-Zalman CPU fan
-500 GB HD
-.....

My question is which motherboard should I buy to get the quad core socket and enable crossfire for two HD 3870 x2 (i know its crazy)!
This is the HD 3870 x2, I want http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121247

Thanks for the suggestion

q6600 or 6700 - no, get the e8400
3870x2, no unless its really really cheap. new nvidia cards are out now, ati soon. as soon as the 4xxx series is released, the 3xxx will drop alot, so buy then.
pc p&c, corsair, ocz etc are fine for psu's
900 case - meh, get a nicer case, the 1200 is pricey, but really nice.
get a diff cpu heatsink. TRUE, ninja for under 25, or kingwin/xigmatek direct touch for ~20
500gb HDD's go for $60-70 now, theyre really cheap, or look at the WD 640gb, awesome drive.

for mobo, if you want a crossfie board, i would suggest x38/x48, but theyre pricey. I would instead pick up the Asus P5Q pro (p45) and just stick with the 1 hd3870x2, or 1 8800gts 512/gtx 260/hd4870

my two cents

Q6600 is fine, a lot of new games/apps are using all 4 cores and there is quite a huge performance gain in apps like photoshop, video encoding

q6600 is way old gen, so unless you need 4 cores, dont buy it. by the time 4 cores become useful, we will be way past the q9450, we'll be on to way next gen and q6600 will be worth $80.

the e8400 is like $150, and goes to 99% guaranteed 4ghz, on any cooling. WAY better for gaming, which is, what we do here right :) pc only needs his quad so he can multitask between cod2, mombot.co.uk, gaylatinodating, gaythugdating, and imgayformyiphone.com

:D

lol werthfagot

but he is kinda right about the multitasking thing... get more cores if you need em... don't go thinking just because quads are cheap and more = better, these cores are in no way being added to gives you a super processor

even if you can push the quad to say... 3.4, thats good, and fast, but 4.0ghz >>>>> 3.4ghz in games, regardless of cores. so basically, if youre gaming, save the cash and get an e8400.

BUT you are missing something out werthless... if you are high res gaming then CPU doesn't have much of a difference ... say maybe 1-2 fps? games are way too gpu defendant these days I can't find the article and no a quad 3.4 vs. 4.0 you won't see a difference... people overclock to insane frequencies like 4 GHZ for those shiny benchmark scores

read that werth and anyone confused about the core battle

Maybe I will get an e8400 OC to 3.6 - 4.0 (after reading a lot on it) for the next 1 or 2 years and them get a quad core later on.
My utilization will be 60 % gaming COD4 and the rest CS3 adobe and solidworks, rhino and Cinema 4D!

So I am not sure right now, what do you think is best with my utilization! A e8400 or q6600 or q9450 (i know its more expensive, but this will be good for  2-3 years)

i agree, games now are all about the gpu. as long as you got a recent dual core over 2ghz you can keep up. all im saying is the e8400 is newer gen, 1333fsb, smaller 45nm=less heat, more oc headroom. trust me an e8400 at +4 ghz is really fast.
