Q6600 or E8400
« on: June 19, 2008, 12:31:01 AM »
I want to get a new CPU but im at odds about which to get, is a Q6600 faster than a E8400? i dont really multitask but i would like to have the extra cores for when future technology uses them. i know Core2duos are better for games but will a Q6600 have the same FPS as an e8400? thanks for your feedback

thats a tough call man. The 8400 is 45nm and the q6600 is 65nm.

The older G0 q6600's used to be able to do 4.0ghz x4. THe new ones are lucky to hit 3.5 from what I read. THe average 8400 also runs at 4ghz, but some can get to 4.5 ghz with little effort. My 3110 which is the same as a 8400 runs at 4.2 ghz 24/7 because any more than that takes way to much juice.

For now Id prolly stick with the 8400 only because only a handful of apps/games use 4 cores, and by the time they do, the new 45nm quads will be cheaper.
A story. A man fires a rifle for many years. and he goes to war. And afterwards he comes home, and he sees that whatever else he may do with his life - build a house, love a woman, change his son's diaper - he will always remain a jarhead. And all the jarheads killing and dying, they will always be me. We are still in the desert.

yea, i agree i just wanted the quad because i wouldnt have to flash my BIOS to get the Q6600 working, the P5n-e SLI supports 45nm 1333mhz FSB but you have to flash to the latest BIOS for stability. ive heard horror stories about BIOS flashing and bricking your board that its scared me away from the 45nm fabrication. Im also worried ill get performance problems too since the P5n-e doesnt officially support it w/o the BIOS flash.

if youre buying a new board and cpu then you have to worry about it since you need an older cpu to boot and flash. some boards will boot with 45nm but you need a bios flash to fully utilize. my DFI came fully functional.

since you have a cpu in it now, flash it now, and good to go when the e8400 comes.

i would go with the 6600, you can get the G0 on ebay for fairly cheap right now.  i am thinking of getting one also.  i think the games will start using them soon.
