Getting a new video card...
« on: October 14, 2008, 05:15:14 PM »
Got about $250 to spend on a new card.  Is this the best deal for a 4780? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125225  Also saw this GTX 260 for $200 after MIR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127361  Should I hold off for a week? I heard that they're announcing nvidia's new line up tomorrow and there might be some price drops.

well, you want a 1gb card.

check the reviews for the 512 vs the 1gb card.

If you cant swing the 1gb(got mine for $270 shipped)  then wait till early in the AM, newegg has open box 4870's for $200, but ya gatta get um quick, as many others do the same. Id wait to buy for a sale or deal.

private sale @ overclocker forums

Quote
BNIB Powercolor HD 4870 1GB - $284
Non-overclocked version. Bought 2 to Crossfire. Hooked up one to my pc and find it more than enough for me.
Note: The one I opened didn't come with a 6-pin adapter so you'll need to buy one if your PSU doesn't have 2.

Visiontek HD 4850 512MB - $139
Got this off krag. Never had any issues, never overclocked. Was going to Crossfire but got the 4870s instead. Comes retail with all accessories & receit.

Evga 8800 GTS G92 512MB - $119
Bought this off hardforum a few months ago. Fine card, stock clocks are 670MHz-1674MHz-1944MHz core-shader-ram. I never overclocked it and have used Rivatuner to run the fan a tad faster keeping it cooler. Comes retail with all accessories.

All prices Include shipping/insurance to the continental US via FedEx Gnd or USPS Priority

Seriously, I've got ATI Radeon HD 4870. The problem is that their normal fan speed is so low, that the graphics overheat fast. Though, they are making the new CCC with fan speed controlling, the graphic card itself isnt much of a hyper gaming one. I've got a Core 2 Quad 2,33GHz computer with 4GB RAM and this graphic card, the result in Mass Effect is that if you put in CCC the best resolution, the latest games will appparently lag ( not much, but it's noticeable ) , so you need to have lowered settings in CCC. Otherwise it's a good graphic card, but honestly I suggest different one and most propably one of the nVidia's latest cards. They are known for really powerful working.

First of all, the new CCC has been out for nearly 3 weeks, with FULL FAN CONTROL.
I came over to ATI from the nvidia camp, and cant say Id go back. I havnt noticed any lag, in crysis wars, cod4, cod2, grid. All completely maxed out @ 1920*1200

Saphire 1gb 4870 that I reference.

lol well see.  quads do much better in 3dmark, besides the OC on these cards suck.
